Battle of Wits: Karen Jimeno, Sonny Angara and Adel Tamano

At first, I thought we really don't need this impeachment trial, we have more urgent problems in this country that needs to be addressed and this is just a complete waste of time. However, I noticed how it's shaping to be a compelling courtroom drama. To me, it seemed like the Chief Justice appears like he has already been sentenced by the public but thanks to the spokespersons of the prosecution and the defense, I think they are really doing good job explaining the technicalities of the impeachment proceedings that a Juan dela Cruz doesn't really understand. I only wish the spokespersons be given enough airtime instead of the senator-judges who should all remain neutral to all parties at all times but as it appears sometimes, they are helping the prosecutors in prosecuting the case.

Anyhow, back to what this entry is all about -

Atty. Adel Tamano

For the coverage, I've been watching it through ANC where the bedimpled Atty. Adel Tamano reports from the senate and gives his insights and interviewing senators and spokespersons. Atty. Tamano is not really an overnight celebrity, after losing in the last senatorial race he's now the host of ANC's talk show, "Tamano Perspective".

He is the first Filipino Muslim to graduate from Harvard Law School and the first to be a president of a university in Metro Manila (Pamantasan ng Lunsod ng Maynila). Truly, Smart is Sexy.

Defense Spokesperson, Atty. Karen Jimeno

She has postponed the honeymoon and has taken the job pro-bono. Yes... she's taken. She just got married on January 7, 2012 to an American investment banker, Evan McBride. (Sorry, guys!)

Little is known about her but according to online sources, Jimeno is from Paranaque City and went to the University of the Philippines School of Law and went on to Harvard University for her Master of Laws. She used to be with the Quisumbing, Torres, Evangelista law offices until very recently and is also listed as one of the lawyers under Baker and McKenzie.

What is really admirable about her is how she answers questions with such class and grace. She's always calm and collected, definitely a breath of fresh air. As one blogger noted, "she provides an oasis of decorum and dignity to the jologry that has long been the hallmark of Philippine print and broadcast news."

Prosecution Spokesperson, Cong. Juan Edgardo "Sonny" Angara Jr.

Cong. Sonny Angara represents the Lone District of Aurora and son of incumbent Senator Edgardo Angara.

He finished his undergraduate studies at London School of Economics and Political Science in England. He took up and finished law at the University of the Philippines College of Law. He continued his post-graduate legal studies and finished his Master of Laws at Harvard Law School.

A Battle of Wits

From a legal point of view I think definitely, the defense has it but from the viewpoint Juan dela Cruz the prosecution will have it. With the participation of lawyers like Jimeno, Angara and post interview perspectives of Tamano, it has elevated the level of discussion. Huge break from our typical lawmakers. Sure, Atty. Serafin Cuevas is still brilliant but he acts more like a law professor and all the legal littanies leave me dumbfounded more often.

Not everyone appreciates the ongoing impeachment trial but with the pretty faces and solid credentials, it makes it rather interesting. To me, people like them are the new faces we need for a new Philippines, with substance and top-notch professionalism.

I know I'm late with all the hype on Department of Tourism's new slogan but time for some country love!

I've been a fan of Sen. Gordon's accomplishments, one of which is his WOW Philippines campaign. It has been the country's battle cry for years but of course, the government needs to do more in promoting the country as a tourist destination. According to Tourism Secretary Ramon "Mon" Jimenez Jr., the slogan answers the fundamental question, 'Why the Philippines?'." 8 ad agencies were invited to bid and BBDO won with a simple campaign that sells the idea of fun.

The real budget will be spent mostly on an international campaign, and expect many creative ideas to appear abroad soon. I'm actually really hoping (and excited!) to see a Philippine Tourism TVC while watching my favorite shows on NatGeo Adventure. Now, because of the low budget, the campaign will rely on social media hence the hashtagged campaign, #1ForFun and #itsmorefuninthephilippines.

This is what I love about my country, the Bayanihan spirit is always alive!

So while the Government improves support services like immigration, customs and transportation services in order to give tourists a better experience when they come over; we as Filipinos have to unite in marketing and promoting our country in our own little way. (I personally believe that as a Filipino, it's our responsibility to introduce other Nationalities to Adobo. *winks*)

Beckham and L.A. Galaxy win against Philippine Azkals, 6-1

It's not embarrassing

As most of us expected LA Galaxy won the friendly, 6-1.

While some people have been saying stuff on twitter like how embarrassing it was or the what ifs like if it was Real Madrid it could be 20-0, let's put things into perspective here.

The LA Galaxy are MLS Cup Champs and their team is bannered by Landon Donovan - all-time leader in scoring and assists for the US National Team, Robbie Keane, all-time record Irish goalscorer and THE David Beckham, international football superstar. The Azkals or the Philippine National Football team, despite being one of the oldest national teams in Asia, are yet to qualify for the Asian Cup or the World Cup. So to say that it was embarassing, come on. We have a lot to improve on, we have quality players and with hard work and dedication, it's just a matter of time.

Scoring Barrage

David Beckham scored the opening goal with his trademark right-footed strike from outside the box in the 20th minute. It was an awesome first half, the Azkals were putting pressure and they had several opportunities to equalize including a couple of chances for Manny Ott. In the 38th minute, Mike Magee scored another goal for the Galaxy after a beautiful pass from Landon Donovan. In the 41st minute, Azkals' Phil Younghusband unleashed a left-footed strike to cut the Galaxy lead to just 2-1 by halftime. David Beckham setup a goal for Robbie Keane from a corner and after that goal, LA Galaxy just dominated the game. Adam Cristman scored twice breaking the Azkals defense. Retiring Gregg Berhalter scored on a penalty kick for a foul by Anton del Rosario.

We had Ed Sacapano as GK for the game and I think that Filipinos expected an awful lot from him since he is replacing a pretty clean record from Neil Etheridge. He had some huge saves though so let's not put the blame on him. After LA Galaxy's third goal, the Azkals were just all over the place. They were already lacking on defense and were just too tired. Coach Michael Weiss was unhappy with how they performed during the second half. I think the adrenaline rush during the first half pumped them to play really well but they basically just ran out of energy after.

I didn't expect Coach Weiss to be fielding in some players from the bench as we all know his style, he's not really fond of utilizing his bench for fresh legs. With Coach Bruce Arena fielding lots of players from the bench during the second half, we saw lot's of subs from the Philippine side too. Jason de Jong for Manny Ott, Misagh Bahadoran for Chieffy, Nate Burkey for Phil and Ian Araneta for Angel Guirado, OJ Clarino for James and Lexton Moy for Chris Greatwich. Captain's armband was also transferred from Caligdong to Greatwich to del Rosario.

Dream Cup

I guess what most people mean when they say they dream of playing LA Galaxy is they dream of playing against David Beckham. The LA Galaxy afterall is a US 'Soccer' Team. But just the same, the Azkals get to taste how it's like to play against a high-caliber international football team.

Before the match, Beckham was reported to have been contractually-obliged to play for at least 45 minutes. Seeing him still play for another 27 minutes during the second half was just surreal. I mean, helloooo.... David Beckham is playing in Philippine Soil, how cool is that?

When he was asked by Dyan Castillejo after the match why he played for extra minutes, he answered - "I saw him arrive, and I’m a huge fan of his, so it’s a big thing,” (of Pacquiao). After his time in the game, Beckham is shown on TV handing the jersey he used to Manny Pacquiao.

After the game, the Azkals traded jerseys with LA Galaxy players. Angel Guirado was wearing Donovan's jersey during their usual post-game oval lap. Landon Donovan was also seen wearing Azkals skipper, Aly Borromeo's jersey. Beckham, a man of his word, kept his promise to Phil Younghusband and gave him another jersey during the post match presscon.

Lessons Learned

As much as we are relying on our players who are based abroad. We should develop and strengthen the pool of young players who are based here. I mean, those based abroad aren't exactly available all the time when they are called. We miss their services most of the time.

Take for instance, the German National Team, every world cup you see not so popular players and they turn them into lethal weapons. I know we don't have a talent to build a Messi YET but I think, with the quick passing, chemistry, and having a solid program for developing young players are things the Philippines can actually accomplish.

I would like to quote what Bruce Arena said during the post game presscon -

“Just work hard and be proud of your national team,” said Arena. “I was with the United States team for a number of years and we chased the dream and we’re qualifying now on a regular basis for the World Cup.

“Once we were—oddly enough—in the global sport of football, known as a small country. Now we’ve grown into a big country in the sport and there’s no reason why that same dream can’t be chased here.”

Despite the result, our boys can only get better playing against world class players. Nonetheless, this is one for the books!

28th Wedding Anniversary

Aside from Thanksgiving, today is my parents' 28th Wedding Anniversary. The world is full of divorce and abuse. Their relationship isn't exactly perfect but to me it has been a wonderful example of steadfastness, romance, sacrifice, compromise, devotion, respect, submission, commitment and friendship. Thank you for choosing to honor your vows through all these years and for sticking together through tough times. I love you both so dearly and am forever grateful.

Manny Pacquiao's MP Promotions Logo

So Pacquiao won.

Being a Filipino, I'm happy that he won. To me, Marquez was the challenger and he had to make Manny bleed and cry for him to win. He didn't do that. This blog entry is not to talk about Manny's fight. I'm no boxing expert, in fact... the only time I watch boxing is if Pacquiao's in the ring.

Anywaaaaay.

I saw this logo on a tarp behind an interview before the match next to the Top Rank logo. The first thing that came to mind is - that's a Manny Pacquiao logo! The way the fist forms M and P is already a giveaway. I did a little research to confirm and yes, it's for MP Promotions. The logo looks superman-ish although the colors represent his Filipino roots.

Red represents passion, speed and danger. Blue for trust and reliability while Yellow for warmth and happiness. The logo surely represents Manny, not only as boxer but also as a public servant and celebrity. But...

While there is an element of subjectivity here, I'd like to discuss what I really think about the logo.

Boxing Promotions is a serious business. (Not that having your own line of perfume, hand sanitizer and body wash isn't.) I just personally think the colors are not appropriate for his promotions business. The red-blue-yellow will work with his body wash and skin care line packaging but not with this.

Just look at the logos of 3 famous promotional outfits I know of...

Black has the capacity to imbue some seriousness to a hue. It's possibly visually boring sure... but black on white and black and white is a scheme that means business and power.

But hey, it's just me. I'm no expert, I don't have a degree in graphic design. It's my personal opinion. The logo is cool but the colors doesn't feel right. I like the idea behind the logo and Mark Wood did an awesome job. I especially like how he designed the packaging for his perfume though, look.

See? If we could tone it down to something as simple like how it's applied in the perfume packaging, it'll look more serious and sophisticated.

Tella and Kate are planning to take their small bakery business to a new level, I took it upon myself to create a logo. Tella told me they're planning to name their business "KRATE".

Let's start with some inspiration. I personally like the Georgetown Cupcake logo. (Tella and Kate are fans of DC Cupcakes)

I have no training whatsoever and I don't even practice but I like graphic design. I like typography and design and I know how to use photoshop. See, many designers get by without drawing but it's to their detriment. Elements of design are rooted in drawing. But we don't need to a be a Michaelangelo to create a decent logo or a web page design. I just believe that the better we draw, the better we design. I'm no graphic artist and I really don't consider myself as one. Well, at least not just yet.

Alright, now let's start sketching.

I ended up with this and I'm not too happy.

Kristella and Kate's Baked Goodies

Sisters, Kristella and Kate are my brother's housemates back in Melbourne, 4 years ago. The first time I met Kate was during a marketing campaign for ANZEC when she talked about her experiences as an international student in Australia. 2 months ago, I found myself in the same training room with her older sister, Kristella and their cousin Yen (also my brother's housemate). Small world!

I started to get along with Kristella (or Tella as I fondly call her) pretty well and I feel like I already know her through my brother's stories. Like myself, Tella is a foodie and a creative enthusiast. We talk a lot about blogs we love and about pursuing our passion for design and the arts. I found out that Tella also loves to bake together with her sister, Kate during one of those getting-to-know-you-games in training. Our American trainer asked her if she could bring some cupcakes to work for us to taste and a week after she brought these -

They did not disappoint. Tella received a lot of orders for their cupcakes. I learned that they also have a catering business. They were recently our ompany's caterer for Customer Service Week and man, their mom's cooking is divine! No wonder her girls' baked goodies are so delish!

The following week, Tella brought some cinnamon cupcakes with caramel frosting.

My favorite cupcake ever is the Red Velvet Vixen from Sonja's. I was so happy when I found out that Kate and Tella bakes their own red velvet cupcake too. It's moist and flavorful and I love that the cream cheese icing on top is not too sweet. I only wish they add more icing to make it swirl like most cupcakes I've eaten.

SEAG: PH Azkals vs Vietnam

The Philippines Under-23 team is hoping to win their first ever medal for football this year. They will open their SEA Games campaign against a higher-ranked Vietnam squad today at the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium, Jakarta. The game will be aired live on Studio 23 starting 4:30 p.m.

It's been a year after the Azkals defated Vietnam in the 2010 Suzuki Cup. The Philippines is drawn together with football powerhouse Vietnam in Group B together with Brunei, Laos, Timor Leste and Myanmar. Vietnam is ranked 134th while the Philippines is at No. 158.

We are underdogs YET again but we have awesome players plus a last minute big boost with Filipino-German midfielder Manny Ott joining the team in Jakarta, Indonesia.

Let's support the Azkals Under-23 team in the hopes of bringing home the country's first ever medal in SEAG football.

I remember having a conversation with a friend about quarter life crisis, like how I didn't know where to go and how unsure I was, She sipped coffee from her big mug and said, "Ven, I quit my job, took culinary classes, and even went to Dubai to figure out what I really want and now that I'm back I don't know... look at me now." I felt a weird sense of relief.

That was 2 years ago.

Ever since I turned 25, I've been constantly asking myself questions like, 'what makes me happy?'. '...if it makes me happy can I make a living out of it?', 'will I earn more than what am getting now?' more and more often before sleeping I've been working in the BPO industry (Call Center) since I graduated from College. I tried to get out of it, I had my own business which somehow failed, I worked in an IT company as a programmer too but coding wasn't my calling.

I took the safe way to figure out what I wanted to do and apparently through the years, I didn't get out of that phase. Since my first job as a Citiphone Officer, I was already telling myself this is not what I ought to be doing but I never took any action. In just a few years, I'll be 30, it doesn’t feel good to not have enough money. It’s a scary feeling when you are in your late 20's and still in the process of figuring out who you are and what you want to do.

I think nobody has to live a cookie cutter life designed by their family, their peers or the media. There were instances when I feel like I was forced into roles that I wasn't willing to take and just wanted it safe you know, to be part of the "norm". This is also why sometimes I dislike attending family reunions, the old folks keep comparing me with my other cousins who "fulfill" the standards. Also, a lot of my friends are starting to settle down, buying houses, and getting married. Every wedding and reunion I go to, I feel pressured to jump onto their boat.

OK, so things may not be so awesome right now and my life may not seem very appetizing. I dislike my job, I stopped looking forward to socializing, stopped enjoying the things I used to enjoy, and my life suddenly seems flat and boring. I have nothing to look forward to, nothing that makes me all excited to go to work.

Should I quit? Yes, but not just yet. See, the only things that hold me back are finances and my own ambition. I have stuff I need to do to prepare me for the things that I want to focus on come January. I still need the pay from my current job to finance my "preparation".

It’ll be hard but I know I'll get through this. As what they always say, "it's the journey that matters". I'm sure there are hundreds or even thousands of fellow 20-somethings out there who have no idea what to do with their lives.

Together let's pursue our passions and do what we've always wanted to do. Let's start being happy, let's stay hungry and foolish!

Kick-off will push through even if it is raining. Only the referee can postpone the game if he deems that the pitch is unplayable. He will first wait 30 mins and judge again if game can be resumed, wait another 30 min and judge if the game can be resumed. Only after this one hour of wait can the referee postpone the game. FORMATION CHANGES

Weiss has announced that he will revert back to an orthodox 4-4-2 formation in the return leg. The formation uses 2 strikers, 4 midfielders, and 4 defenders. Phil Younghusband and Guirado are expected to partner in attack, while Chieffy Caligdong and James Younghusband will be on the midfield's left and right flanks. The 2 central midfield pivots will be Schrock and either Manuel Ott or Jason de Jong. Meanwhile, defenders Borromeo, Rob Gier, Anton del Rosario, and Ray Anthony Jónsson are expected to hold the fort as the Azkals' back 4. The formation did wonders for the Philippines in the 4-0 mauling of Sri Lanka, but is untested against higher-ranked opponents like Kuwait. (ABS-CBN News)

This will create more scoring opportunities for our strikers! Woohoo! The 4-5-1 formation was effective for our defense but right now, we need to score goals. With Aly Borromeo back with the team our defense is stronger than ever. Stephan Schrock is a very creative and proactive player and with this guy in the midfield it will give the Azkals a different look on both offense and defense.

If Kuwait scores a goal and aggregates are tied at the end of 90 mins, they advance on superior away goals and we are out.

It Ain't Over 'Till It's Over

Kuwait defeated the Philippine Azkals, 3-0.

Sure, I'm sad that we were defeated but we have to keep in mind, Kuwait is a stronger and a more experienced team (toughest opponents thus far). I am not disheartened, we still have the home game on the 28th, a lot can happen. I joined the rest of the country who stayed up late that night to watch the game. What really amazed me about this match is hearing the Filipinos in the crowd actually singing the Philippine National Anthem! It was reported earlier that most of the Filipinos working in Kuwait took a time off from work just to watch the game. It's crazy how The Azkals could unite the Filipinos and make us proud of being a Filipino overnight. That to me, is priceless.

Coach Weiss opted for a 4-5-1 formation with Sabio, Gier, del Rosario and Jonsson manning the back four. James Younghusband, Ott, de Jong, Guirado and Chieffy in the midfield, Phil Younghusband was the lone striker. The said formation is usually used during an away fixture or by lower-ranked teams against higher ranking teams. It is a defensive formation and it's expected that there will be rare scoring opportunities.

The Azkals obviously focused on the defense against the stronger Al-Azraq not allowing them to execute their game well. The strategy worked, the defense was solid except that it started crumbling during the 2nd half of the game. In the first few minutes of the game the Azkals were moving, we could've even gotten an opening goal. The Kuwait players looked obviously frustrated and well, surprised with the level of skill of our players hence the adjustments they made in the 2nd half.

The Second goal was a scrappy goal, however it went in I don't know. I watched the clips, I just don't understand how it went in. Unlucky really. The boys lost steam during the second half, I was expecting Coach Weiss to replace some players with fresh legs but the team just defended and defended deep till the very end. There could have been substitutions but maybe Coach Weiss wasn't willing to risk it? I don't know.

For all those who are quick to criticize, we have a lot to learn. All the Azkal-bashing, it only shows the lack of football knowledge and the crab mentality of the Filipinos. They represent the Philippines, our players fought hard and bravely, they deserve some respect. They were playing against an experienced team plus they have the home field advantage. We may not be one of the footballing giants in Asia (yet) but we have top-notch players and they impressively played well. Despite being underdogs they are still a threat, even acknowledged by the Kuwait coach Goran Tufegdzic,

“I’m not surprised. I know this team (Philippines) has good players. This team is strong and very serious if it keeps to system.”*

My friends, it's just a matter of time.

With a 0-3 deficit, it will be a tough and daunting job for the Azkals but with the massive support and home field advantage anything is possible. You can ask any Football fan (or a Liverpool Fan!). A loss would end our chances of advancing in the next round of Asian Qualifiers of the 2014 World Cup and that will just be really heartbreaking but I have my hopes up and this is going to be an epic game.

The Azkals Rekindled My Love for Football

My father was a basketball player, he played for his school and is a die-hard fan of the PBA, he'd even proudly show me his teeth and how it got knocked loose playing basketball. He introduced me to Samboy Lim and of course, the Big J. He taught me how to shoot properly, how the other hand should support the ball on the side and the leg to hand energy transfer, things like that.

Despite playing and living in a basketball-crazy nation, he was a football fan too. He'd always tell me how he believes Football is more suited for Filipinos and not basketball. You don't need to be tall to play football, you need speed and agility. Back then, it was hard for me to understand his passion for the game, we didn't have cable, I couldn't watch the games, I didn't know anyone local who played football, none of my friends were interested.

For most of them, it was a game played only by students in International Schools. My father introduced me to football during the 2002 FIFA World Cup when it was held in Japan and Korea. It was my first time to watch a football game, I was already 18. Watching it gave me a whole new appreciation for the game, the players and the fans. What made it even more memorable is that controversial match between Korea and Italy. I was rooting for Italy then mainly because I had a huge crush on Paolo Maldini but at the same time I was happy that an Asian country won against a European Football giant. It was beautiful and inspiring.

Then I wished, ...that in the future I could cheer for my own country in the World Cup.

It was my cousin Sander who taught me how to play. Sander was here for a vacation back in 2004. His mom was so proud of him telling the entire clan how he's so popular back in their hometown. Sander played for some youth club in Netherlands, he even brought a ball with him during his stay. He showed me how to control, explained to me some of the rules, and taught me the basics. I remember him asking me about our football team and all I could say was, I don't know. He just gave me a weird look and told me about how he has friends who are half-Pinoy football players, he said... "it's nice if we play for Philippines, yeah?"

For years, I spent some late nights watching live UEFA and Premiere League matches while the Philippine National Team weren't winning, unappreciated, underfunded and unsupported. Few years ago, I saw an Alaska TVC with Phil Younghusband and I thought could this be it? A footballer, half Pinoy but a footballer that plays for the country. Wow.

Last year, Sander's sister Genieve was here for 2-week vacation. While I was driving to Greenbelt she asked me if I know a Rox Dorlas and am like, "Rox, who?" Then she went about telling me about her friend, Rox who apparently plays for the Philippine National Football Team. Inside I was freaking out, holy shit. Over lunch at Cibo, she told me how they met Rox back in Dan Haag then a couple of days after that, we were already planning a dinner with him and Phil Younghusband. She met up with Rox a couple of days before and they had drinks at Central with some of my cousins. Unfortunately, both had an upset stomach the following day that lasted for days hence this whole meeting Rox and Phil did not materialize. Boo!

When Genieve left, I found out Rox plays for San Beda and I started "researching" about our National Team, how they are using Foreign-based players with the likes of the Younghusbands, Greatwich, Etheridge, Jonsson, Ott and de Jong. I was highly optimistic, 2010 being the World Cup year, the hangover was still there. I started thinking about the conversations I had with Papa and Sander - Papa telling me with the right support and system we could excel in Football and how Sander insisted we need the help of foreign based players.

Then came the Suzuki Cup back in December 2010, after that stunning win over Vietnam, the entire nation caught the Azkals fever. I never thought it would happen but man, I STILL can't believe it.

After cuddling up in my blanket watching football matches for years during wee hours, rooting for Spain, Italy and Korea after years of dreaming... it's slowly becoming real. I can talk about football with pride and my friends can actually relate. I share the same passion with a lot of people in the country now. We have a good football team and they're also looking good. I'm not a football purist if you call it that but I think it helps a lot that the Azkals are good looking too. Some people criticize how we rely so much on our foreign based players but I'd like to quote the famous Blue Haired Fanatic, Ebong Joson,

"Don't call them Fil-Foreigners. They are Filipinos. When they chose to wear our colors, they can no longer play for another country in the World Cup."

Our National Team, the Azkals made history for qualifying in the second leg of the World Cup Qualifiers and tonight they're up against Kuwait. The Kuwait National Football Team or the "Al-Azraq" already played in the World Cup back in 1982 and is currently ranked higher than the Philippines (57 places).

It'll be a tough challenge for our boys especially that we're missing some key players but I believe they will defy the odds. I expect our boys will be defensive and will do everything they could to keep the Kuwait team from scoring. We have top notch, awesome players and with the massive support, I'll be staying up tonight together with the entire nation to watch and support them. Go Azkals! We Believe.

Nagsasa Cove, Zambales

A lot of people know about Anawangin Cove but what a lot of people don't know is that there is another cove about 20 mins further waiting to be explored. Anawangin is getting too many visitors on weekends and Nagsasa interestingly is more peaceful and cleaner.

As we enter the cove, the peaceful and wonderful scene of the beach greeted us. The sky was very blue and decorated with clouds. There were more foreigners than local tourists. We were greeted by Mang Ador, the 'owner' of the campsite, we were told that we could use the hut, hammocks, restrooms and if we needed, hot water in thermos or pans, we could just ask him for it, all for 100 PHP / overnight. He told us that our group would be the only visitors in the camp for the day, the rest are leaving before sunset. Great, we had the campsite for ourselves, woohoo!

We immediately went around to check out the surrounding areas and it was just amaaaazing. The water was crystal clear and it was so peaceful and quiet. Mang Ador was kind enough to tell us how Nagsasa came about, how it didn't exist before. He said that it only appeared after the eruption of Mount Pinatubo in 1991. The beach is made of fine volcanic sand hence the uneven spread along the cove.

Around 5pm we pitched our tent and prepared dinner. By that time, we were the only visitors in the campsite, it was unbelievably peaceful. By the way, there is no mobile signal in Nagsasa Cove, so better inform your family about your whereabouts and prepare for emergencies as well.

We had hotdogs and tuna for dinner.

This is the rest room / shower, it's surprisingly clean.We spent the night toasting marshmallows on an open fire and consumer a bottle of Genereso brandy and coke that we bought from San Antonio Market. Mang Ador's son graciously showed us a few card tricks and told us it was a good idea that we already brought coke with us, the other campsite at the other end of the cove sold a bottle of 1.5 coke for 150.00. Wow. It was a fun night, sitting around a camp fire telling stories is one of life's simple little pleasures!

I woke up around 4 in the morning and rest my head outside the tent just staring at the stars, I haven't seen so many stars my entire life! I think I saw 2 shooting stars and made a wish even. haha. My SO woke up and stayed beside me and we just both stared at the stars talking about our life together. Anywaaaay....

Around 6 in the morning, we walked around and enjoyed the place as much as we possibly can. We had corned beef, century tuna and bread for breakfast. Around 9AM, we were packing and getting ready to leave Nagsasa. I returned the thermos we borrowed from Mang Ador, that's his "kubo" below and a picture of his boys with our boatman.

It was a sad goodbye, I didn't want to leave. I fell in love with the place, I hope it doesn't turn into a crowded tent city soon. We also visited Anawangin and Capones but I decided to highlight our stay in Nagsasa Cove.

If you plan to visit Nagsasa Cove in the future,

Bring enough supply like water for drinking and food.

Bring a zip lock or plastic to protect your cameras and mobile phones, trust me you'll need it.

His wife is also nice, we were all wet and dirty after our boat ride and he told us to take a shower in their own home first before leaving for Manila and even served us ice cold water!

After our overnight stay in Nagsasa, we went to the more popular, Anawangin Cove. There were more people here and it's sad that it's slowly turning into a crowded tent city but still beautiful nonetheless.

Starbucks Philippines 'No Smoking' Campaign

In line with the call of MMDA to make Metro Manila a smoke-free region, Starbucks Philippines has announced that “all Starbucks stores nationwide will be smoke-free.” No Smoking in all Starbucks branches in the Philippines starting June 27. “All previously designated smoking outdoor areas will be converted to non-smoking."

Who wants to smell smoke the very moment you step out of the store? Personally, I don’t like second-hand smoke because of the health consequences and I also just don’t like to get smoke in my clothing when I am out. Smokers have rights as well but they should not subject others to their bad habits. A lot of the customers sit there for hours and smoke without regard for other customers. I don't smoke, not anymore. When I go out with my friends, more often am compelled to stay outside because most of them smoke and I don't really feel comfortable at all. This smoking ban would create a more pleasant environment for Starbucks customers and protect them from the harmful health effects of smoking.

This is definitely a bold move by Starbucks Philippines. The large coffee chain is setting a really good example for other coffee shops and restaurants with outdoor smoking areas. The no smoking campaign is in compliance with the new Smoking Ordinance Republic Act Section 5, No. 9211. The main thrust of the said Act is to promote a healthful environment and inform the public of the health risks associated with cigarette smoking and tobacco use among others. This is also in line with Starbucks Corp's health and wellness strategy, "at some point in the future".

TOMS Shoes launches TOMS "One-For-One" Eyewear

After giving away a million shoes last year, Chief Shoe Giver, Blake Mycoskie and his team at TOMS is embarking on a new journey, TOMS Eyewear. In case you aren't familiar with TOMS mission, their first project, TOMS Shoes - they donate a pair of shoes for each pair bought. This time though for each pair of TOMS glasses sold, someone from a poverty-striken community will get prescription glasses with the help from eye doctors.

Here's how it works:

“It dοеѕ nοt matter thе cost, іt dοеѕ nοt matter thе disability, wе wіll fix іt,” ѕаіd Tyler Mycoskie during the project announcement. They've launched eye care programs in Nepal, Tibet and Cambodia. They're working with what they call a "Sight Giving Partner," which will administer the actual eye programs.

The glasses start at $135 and come in three styles and feature three hand-painted stripes. The hand-painted stripes symbolize the three elements of One for One. The first stripe on the temples represents you. The stripe on the tips represents the person you are helping give sight to. And the middle stripe is TOMS, bringing the two together.

Now I wonder when it will be available here in the Philippines. I hope Trilogy Boutique or Rustans get their stock very soon. I already want to replace my Wayfarer with their Classic 101!

Office Bay Decoration: March Madness

The leadership team at the center comes up with different activities that the agents could engage in. Just a time off from answering calls and irate customers. This month they wanted the teams to decorate our respective bays just like what we did back in December. This was our bay back then, unfortunately we were only in 2nd place.

This time, our team was so bent on being 1st. Besides, who remembers 2nd place? We were never 1st on team rankings in terms of performance, highest we've been since I joined the team was only 2nd. I'm glad I'm with this current team I'm in otherwise I might've resigned already or requested to be transferred to another team or account. I like how there's no friction between the members and everyone has a good working relationship with our team lead. He's the funniest and probably the most supportive boss I've ever had. When we have bad months, the bosses would always tell us how strong our team is and how we should use it to drive performance. Ah, I'm just really thankful.

Anyway, we talked about how we'll decorate our bay. Every member shared their ideas and some even went to the office on their rest day just to help out. Our bay is perhaps one of the longest if not the longest in the production floor so we really needed more materials and more hands to help us get it done. Everyone liked the idea of caricature or just taking headshots and putting it in some cheerleader or basketball player's body. Hence, we took headshots.

The theme was March Madness, according to Wikipedia it is, "The NCAA Men's Division Basketball Championship, is a single elimination tournament held each spring in the United States, featuring 68 college basketball teams, both conference champions and at-large selections. The tournament, organized by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), It's held mostly in March, it is informally known as March Madness or the Big Dance; the tournament, and especially the national semi-finals and final (the Final Four), has become one of the nation's most prominent sporting events."

Each bay was assigned a specific team, in our case... we were assigned: Michigan State Spartans.

Although cute, it was rather embarrassing to see our heads photoshopped into some cheer leader's body. But hey, we'll do everything for bragging rights and a month of dress down pass! Nothing beats going to work in jeans and sneakers.

When things at the call center are going horribly wrong for the team, we go out-of-town for an escape. It's not a formal team building really, it's fun and it's crazy. We all feel better for a day or two and predictably go back to the same old routine after. But hey do your company a favor, we all need a time off and a certain kind of intervention to survive in the workplace.

New Year at Sonya's Garden

For the first day of 2011, I drove to Sonya's Garden with the girlfriend... it was our first out-of-town trip together. I decided to surprise her with something more than the regular lunch-movie date after shift.

We arrived at Sonya's late in the afternoon so we decided to have dinner first before pampering. Dinner / Lunch at Sonya's is P610.00/set and food is served sit-down buffet style. I like that you can create your own green salad and the veggies, I understand are organically grown in their own garden. Served with the veggies is a basket of freshly baked bread with different spreads.

Next came a huge bowl of steaming hot pasta noodles with two types of sauces, tomatoes cooked in olive oil and the creamy one, it also came with Salmon Belly! I just have to say, the noodles were perfectly al dente. Yummo! For dessert, we were served a slice of sinful chocolate cake, sweetened camote, and turon topped with sesame seeds. For drinks, we had Sonya's tarragon tea and fresh dalandan juice.

At 8pm, we went to the Spa... we both tried Sonya's Signature Massage for P785/hour. Their signature massage is a combination of Shiatsu and Swedish. We booked separate rooms since there's no available couple's room. If you decide to book a couple's room in the future though, there's an additional fee of P100.

This spot was magical and I couldn't help but stand in awe. Nice!!!
